What inspires you as a cinematographer?

I'm inspired by people and their stories. Starting a documentary film is like beginning an education on a person and their story. I love learning about the topic and the person.

What made you want to take on this project? What is the most challenging part of capturing architecture on film?

I get to go back, at long last, to Chicago, my old hometown. And work with Laila again? What's not to like? We will have to see what the most challenging part is. We're not there yet and every project is a little different. I'll be bringing an ultra wide lens with me, I know that.

Three pieces of advice you have for emerging documentary cinematographers?

Be open to the moment and to the environment.

Pay attention to the stories that are being told.

Get up very early in the morning.

Chicago or Seattle? Why?

Seattle but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Chicago. I'm looking forward to going back. It has been too long!

If you had to pick a favorite building anywhere in the world, what would it be and why?

That's a tough one. Maybe Hagia Sophia in Istanbul? I loved the vastness of the dome and the layers of history held within.
